See those? That’s the start of a suit of armor, made out of paper. It’s not going to stay paper, though–it will get hardened with resin and fiberglass and built up and smoothed out until it actually looks like something cool. I’ve seen pictures online for a while now of people using this method to make Halo armor, Iron Man suits, and the like. When I found the patterns for Alphonse Elric’s armor from Fullmetal Alchemist, I decided I had to give it a try.

This technique is known as pepakura–the term actually refers to the software used to take a 3D model and turn it into a paper-folding pattern. Here’s a good series of video tutorials about it, if anyone’s interested.
